MS Green Ammonia will innovate the maritime industry by bringing green fuels to the market
The shipping industry enables global resource sharing but contributes around 3% of global emissions. In response, the EU and IMO have set ambitious targets to significantly reduce emissions by 2030, leading to initiatives like EU ETS and FuelEU Maritime, which impose penalties on non-compliant shipping companies. Driven by regulatory and consumer demands for greener transport, the industry is investing in new technologies to cut emissions but requires improved access to capital and grants.
We are developing a series of green ammonia bunkering vessels, uniquely designed to deliver and be fueled by green ammonia. Collaborating closely with customers and ports, we offer flexible bunkering solutions, including ship-to-ship and ship-to-terminal options, tailored to meet specific needs and overcome port limitations. Our «MS Green Ammonia» design, approved in principle by DNV in 2022, aims to be one of the world’s first ammonia-powered tankers, set to launch in 2028, to supply green ammonia along the Norwegian coast, the Arctic region, and continental Europe.
We believe in partnerships to accelerate our progress and efficiency in a rapidly evolving market. Collaborating with LMG Marine, we’ve developed a flexible concept design for transporting up to 5000 tonnes of green ammonia, and with Wärtsilä, we’re creating a vessel with a green propulsion system powered by the world’s first ammonia engine. Supported by soft funding from The Research Council of Norway and Innovation Norway, we aim to enhance the green ammonia value chain by connecting production sites with end-users through optimized voyage routes, ensuring competitive pricing.
